Captions that improve retention without visual noise

Prioritize readability

Use high contrast, predictable placement, and short line lengths. Two lines are usually enough. Break lines at natural phrase boundaries rather than at arbitrary character counts.

Use emphasis sparingly

Highlight only the word that carries the meaning of a sentence. When every word moves or changes color, emphasis stops functioning and the viewer spends more energy decoding the design.

Respect timing

A caption should appear as the phrase begins and leave when the phrase ends. Avoid flashing single words too quickly. Natural chunks are easier to scan and feel more professional.

Protect the frame

Keep captions away from interface overlays and the speaker’s mouth. Test the final export inside the actual platform UI before approving a reusable template.
